President's Message

Hi All:

Our final program on May 12 featured the Executive Director of The Front Porch, Ann Robinson, who described the support services her organization offers, to help young people avoid incarceration and rebuild lives at home.

Looking back over the year, we have offered some exceptional programs from a variety of NGOs in Savannah.  They provide services for children in foster care, for youth in need of emergency housing, for LGBTQ young people and adults, for migrant and refugee communities in Chatham County, and for teens and women to access abortion and family planning.

Our organization approved the 2022-23 Slate of Officers.  We will begin the next year with an energetic and talented group of women to lead the organization.  I look forward to working with each and every one of them.

In light of the SCOTUS leak and the likely end to Roe, a number of Abigails joined rallies in downtown Savannah to defend access to abortion. On May 14 the Georgia Project and Planned Parenthood joined with other groups to organize a teach-in and a rally at the Chatham County Courthouse to defend reproductive rights.  We are reminded of the need for active engagement and hard work on this critical issue.

Mark your calendars now.  We are planning a Kick Off Social to allow current and new members to gather and celebrate a year of in-person programs and activities.  The event will be held at Delegal Sunset Pavilion on Thursday, September 22, 5:00-7:00. Details will follow.

Have a safe and enjoyable summer-whether you are traveling, going to a summer home, welcoming out of town friends and family, or enjoying the many activities Savannah has to offer.

I look forward to seeing many of you at the September Social!

All the best,

Susan

President, Skidaway Abigails

Program Recap

The Front Porch in Savannah

Ann Robinson, Executive Director of The Front Porch

May 12

Before The Front Porch began operations in 2016, 1,881 youth were incarcerated in Chatham County juvenile jail, the highest number in any county in Georgia.  Since then those numbers have dropped by 31%, thanks in part to the role played by The Front Porch.  With public funding, The Front Porch offers one-stop wrap-around services for young people under 18 years of age who are high needs and low risk. Using a model first developed in Las Vegas, the NGO diverts youth from the juvenile court system while also addressing challenges in their family life.

Member Spotlight

Susan Terrio

Susan Terrio grew up in Bucks County, Pennsylvania and studied French and English at Colby College where she met and married her husband Steve. They spent the next 16 years in Pennsylvania and had two daughters.  After teaching for six years at a small liberal arts college, Susan made the momentous decision to pursue a doctoral degree in Anthropology and French Studies at New York University.  “With two children at home, this required big challenges and total buy-in from my husband Steve and our daughters.  I am so grateful for their support.”

Soon after finishing her Ph.D., Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. recruited her to join the French Department faculty.  Over a twenty-five year career, she was instrumental in creating an independent anthropology department, served as the inaugural chair and taught courses in both Anthropology and French studies.  Her numerous research projects and teaching affiliations abroad led to long-term stays in France, Italy, and, most recently, Ireland.  She was awarded writing fellowships from Harvard University, the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, and the National Endowment for the Humanities.  Susan has published four books and a fifth is set to appear in 2023.  The working title is In the Mouth of the Shark: Central American Mothers in Search of Refuge and Peace.

In 2018, Susan and Steve visited Savannah and the Landings, sold their house in the DC suburbs, and moved here four years ago. Susans focus on immigration led her to serve as a legal assistant and visitation volunteer for men and women detained in immigration prisons in Texas and Georgia.  Susan has served as Vice President for Activities in New Neighbors, started a French conversation group, and is in her first term on the board of the Savannah Council on World Affairs.  “I knew about the Abigails before we moved to the Landings.  I had lived and worked in very blue areas in Maryland and DC and so meeting women with similar values was incredibly important to me.  I joined immediately after we were settled and it was the best decision that I ever made.”

Susan, we are grateful that you bring your skills, enthusiasm and vision to your role as President of Skidaway Abigails.  Thank you.
