In 1776, when our country was founded the life expectancy of the average citizen(white/male) was thirty-five years, just old enough to run for President before keeling over. While the Founding Fathers specified that our foremost leader have the maturity to rule, no upper age limitation was imposed in the Constitution. So too, a lifetime appointment to the Supreme Court could hardly be imagined to have a duration of more than twenty-five years.
Today, Biden (age 78) our oldest President to date and has spoken about his intention to run again. Nancy Pelosi (82) forbids questions regarding her re-election plans. While these leaders have demonstrated incredible leadership ability, should there be upper age limits? What age is too old? How does having senior seniors in top leadership roles affect the electorate’s perception of their government?
